Whispersync keeps your Kindle book and Audible audiobook perfectly in sync — here's how to make it work for you
If you’ve ever bought a Kindle book, then wished you had the audio version too, Whispersync is the feature that joins them. It tracks your reading position in both formats and lets you switch between them — or use both at once — without hunting for your place.

Whispersync sounds like a small convenience, but it changes how much you can read. Commute with earbuds, read over lunch, pick up the audiobook while cooking dinner — it’s one continuous book, not two separate copies. Here’s what it actually does, what it costs, and the traps to avoid.
What exactly does Audible Whispersync do?
Whispersync for Voice is Amazon’s system for linking a Kindle eBook to its matching Audible audiobook. When you stop reading on your Kindle at chapter 4, page 112, and open the Audible app, it asks if you want to start at that same spot. It works in reverse too — pause the audiobook and the Kindle app opens to the matching text.
The sync happens at the sentence level, not just the chapter level. Amazon maintains a database that maps each sentence in the eBook to the corresponding moment in the narration. That mapping is what makes the whole thing possible.
Two features come with it:
- Position sync — your place transfers between Kindle and Audible, across any device logged into your account.
- Immersion reading — on a Kindle Fire or the Kindle app, you can listen to the narration while the text highlights in real time. This works on phones and tablets, not on the basic Kindle e-reader.
How does Whispersync work technically?
The short version: Amazon’s servers hold your position, and every device you own checks in with them.
When you read or listen, your device sends your current location to Amazon’s cloud. When you open the other format, it pulls that location down and jumps you to the right sentence. This is why Whispersync works across devices — your phone, your Kindle, your tablet — as long as they’re all logged into the same Amazon account.
The process has three steps:
- Matching. Amazon checks that your Kindle book and your Audible audiobook are the same edition. Not just the same title — the same publisher’s edition, because page numbers and chapter breaks vary between editions.
- Tracking. As you read or listen, your device updates your position to Amazon’s servers.
- Syncing. When you switch formats, the system fetches your last position and starts you there. It takes a few seconds.
One thing people often miss: Whispersync needs both formats linked to the same Amazon account. If your Kindle book was bought on one account and your Audible subscription is on another, they won’t sync. International users face extra steps here because Amazon accounts are region-locked. A Kindle book bought on Amazon.com won’t match an Audible audiobook bought on Audible.co.uk, even if the covers look identical.
Which books support Whispersync?
Not all of them. Only books marked “Whispersync for Voice-ready” have the sentence-level mapping required for syncing and immersion reading. You’ll see this label on the book’s product page — on Kindle, on Audible, or both.
The catalogue is large — over 100,000 titles at last count — but it’s not every book on either platform. A few patterns hold:
- Audible Originals and Audible-exclusive productions often have no Kindle counterpart, so they can’t sync.
- Textbooks and heavily illustrated books rarely qualify because the audio doesn’t map cleanly to the text.
- Books you own in both formats still need the Whispersync label to sync. Owning both isn’t enough.
If you’re checking whether a specific book works, look for the label before you buy. If you already own the Kindle version, Audible’s “Matchmaker” tool (find it in your Audible account) shows which of your eBooks have discounted narration available.
Does Whispersync cost extra?
No. The sync feature itself is free — Amazon doesn’t charge for the position tracking or the sentence-level mapping. What you pay for is the audiobook.
That’s where the real cost question lives. You need both formats to use Whispersync. You can buy them separately at full price, but Amazon discounts the Audible narration when you already own the Kindle book. The “Add Audible Narration” button on a Kindle book’s page shows the discounted price — often less than half the standalone audiobook price.
There’s a cheaper route for Audible subscribers. For Whispersync-ready books, you get a further discount on the narration price — sometimes a few dollars, sometimes more, depending on the title and your plan. This is separate from your monthly credits, which you can spend on any audiobook, Whispersync-ready or not. The full breakdown of how this fits together covers the edge cases.
